What I'm Reading

  • Samantha Hunt: The Invention of Everything Else

Samantha Hunt: The Invention of Everything Else
Highly recommended. However: will it hold up to the post-Revolutionary Road vibe that is now pervasive here? We shall see. We shall see, indeed.

  • Joshua Henkin: Matrimony: A Novel

    Joshua Henkin: Matrimony: A Novel
When everyone you know and respect tells you that this is a must-read book not just because it is very good but also because it details situations and events that are actually very similar to your own real-life events, it's sort of a no-brainer, right? Right.

  • Natsuo Kirino: Out: A Novel

    Natsuo Kirino: Out: A Novel
I'm on an interesting reading journey and I'm following it where it takes me. I've wanted to read Kirino in depth for awhile and this is, I'm told, the right place to start. More soon.

LAist Editors Pick their Favorite Books of the Year

Another list I can get behind because, well, I created it. Or, prompted it. The Editors at LAist share their favorite books they read this year.

Mine is in the bunch and will be no surprise: Tom McCarthy's Remainder.

But: there were several lurking just behind and I want to make mention of the books that really got to me this year (even if they weren't published this year) for a range of reasons. In short, every one of these books has inspired me to continue writing fiction. I can't think of a better reason to admire them than that:

My pick of this year (2008) will be the book I've almost finished reading called The Power of Yin.
I'm currently reading The Power of Yin with a great sense of inspiration and hope, just in time for the upcoming election year. I wish we had more people like Hazel Henderson, Jean Houston and Barbara Marx-Hubbard in leadership roles. These three wonderful ladies are the authors of this remarkable book.
Hope this book tickles your fancy.
Their website tells you much more about it at http://www.thepowerofyin.com/about_power_yin.html All the best to you and yours - Chrissy
