I'm halfway through What is the What. More on that later. Perhaps its because I'm in the middle of this book about the Sudanese Civil War,The Lost Boys & the Ethiopian Revolution and so many related things (child soldiers, for one) that I'm now becoming aware of several newly released books and films that deal with the same subject. Is it my own ignorance that has prevented me from noticing these things until now? Is it simply the universe doing the thing it does when you begin reading about something & then suddenly everything you come into contact with seems related? Or - as I suspect - is there a surprising proliferation of new stories on this subject? And if the latter is true, why only now? After so long?
The short list of new releases that have come to my attention in, literally, the past 24 hours through no searching on my part:
- What is the What by Dave Eggers
- The Beautiful Things that Heaven Bears by Dinaw Mengestu
- A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah
- God Grew Tired of Us film written & directed by Christopher Dillon Quinn
Wonder what I'd find if I searched? Anything else on this subject - or that is closely related - that is newly released and that has crossed your radar? Thoughts on why now? Why not sooner?
